On Saturday, May 3rd, from 10am to 3pm, our project in the Allandale neighborhood, Hersh Residence, will be showcased on the AOLT. Tickets can be purchased HERE through the Modern Architecture + Design Society. We'd love to answer any questions about the project, our landscape design/build process, materials, or just chat and bounce around ideas for your own yard.

Upon entering this property through the open courtyard, you first notice the sense of privacy created by the breeze block walls. The embedded steel address plate creates a subtle transition between street and monochromatic inner sanctum, where the welcoming entryway seats offer easy views of the neighborhood. Simple language and sparse composition carry over to the backyard, which becomes increasingly focused on entertaining with every step.

Following the path to the side gate, you reach the first of three satellite spaces that orbit around the glass-enclosed sitting room. Here, spacious seating across from an outdoor tv offers a relaxing alternative to the more active areas of the yard.

The next space features a fire pit nestled within a round of seats and lit planting beds, encouraging enjoyment of the open landscape under the canopy. Throughout the property the paving rhythm speaks to the openings and edges of the house, so when the dining space opens onto a large swath of leuder patio, you can feel it.

Discreet mounts and seals were custom weatherproof solutions for the fans and pendant lighting of the cedar and steel pergola. A long concrete dining table looks onto the custom kitchen; an inset Big Green Egg and pellet grill are surrounded by a wide concrete work surface that invites large scale entertaining. Beneath, the integrated cabinets and shelving provide ample storage and echo the wood stain of the pergola and the accent colors of the home itself.
