Like many corner lots, this property lacked a clear sense of orientation—it was difficult to tell which side was the front of the house and which was secondary. Compounding that ambiguity, the home had little to no traditional backyard. The primary challenge was to organize the outdoor spaces in a way that felt familiar and intuitive, despite the site’s constraints.
By removing an existing front fence, we strengthened the home’s relationship to the street and gave the front door a clearer presence, establishing a true “front yard” and entry sequence. The side yard was then enclosed and carefully shaped to accommodate a pool and shade structure within a tight footprint.
Maintaining a sense of connection to the neighborhood was important to the clients, particularly around the pool, which had long been a place where they engaged with people passing by. To balance privacy with openness, we designed a low perforated metal fence buffered by layered plantings. When seated at the pool, the space feels private and protected; when standing, visual connections to the street and neighbors remain intact.
