Brought on early in the process, our role on this project was design-focused, collaborating closely with the architect to resolve a complex site with significant constraints. Mature trees, strict setbacks, and substantial grade change from the back of the house down to the swimming pool all shaped the design approach. An additional challenge was the clients’ desire to avoid the use of railings, requiring careful grading strategies to meet code and safety requirements while maintaining a clean, unobstructed experience.
A central goal was to minimize the perceived distance—both physically and visually—between the elevated rear of the house and the low-slung pool at the bottom of the property. Through nuanced grading, terracing, and spatial sequencing, the landscape was designed to feel comfortable, intuitive, and effortless despite the dramatic change in elevation.
Our early involvement allowed for a true dialogue with the architect, aligning landscape and architectural intent from the outset. This collaborative process resulted in a cohesive solution that resolves technical challenges with clarity and restraint.
