gavin residence

march - october 2021

This family got in touch to make their backyard more usable.  They didn't have an easy way to get to the backyard inside, so our proposal included a covered deck connection that ramps down to their landscape.  We wrapped the deck in perforated steel and folded in an outdoor shower.  The ipe railing and decking were built to match the existing deck and railing materials in the front of the house.

This yard slopes a great deal, which allows for interesting spaces in the upper and lower terraces.  We focused our design efforts in the lower terrace with a lawn for unprogrammed play, planting beds solving drainage issues, and access to the house.  The middle yard provides stairs that dissolve into the landscape in the upper terrace further back into the yard, allowing the natural state of the existing landscape to gently merge with the landscape design.

We replaced the existing fencing and gate along the driveway for a slightly different access point and to bring the perforated steel language to the entry.  Star jasmine will soften the railing as it grows in, also giving a dramatically fragrant element around the main outdoor living space.
