This family had specific design needs and asked us turn this sloping, lawned blank canvas into social, kid-friendly series of spaces.  The front yard had quite a bit of grade change, so we strategically leveled planters and lawn with steel retaining walls as well as framed those spaces with plants. The courtyard already had an existing ipe deck, so they needed a shade structure to make it more enjoyable and give a place for vines to grow.  The whole family has places to spend time together and play here, and they are screened with a line of clumping bamboo along the fence.  The backyard is more for the parents to get away in a tranquil, lush space.  We screened their cars from the master bedroom views with a tall steel planter with more bamboo, retained the earth from neighboring yards with board-form concrete walls to level the space for a leuder patio and hammock chairs, and specified very tall emerald bamboo to further screen from nearby second story windows.
